I successfully defended my PH.D. thesis yesterday at Northwestern University. My nerves were under control leading up to it, that is until I went out to lunch with the committee members just prior to the defense, and one of them started telling a horror story about a certain faculty member (fortunately not on my panel) that wouldn't sign off on a student's work because he hadn't read the paper before the defense. Luckily for me, that didn't turn out to be the case. My committee was fantastic!

The defense.

"Quarks" popping. (Nerdy physics humor)

The official sign off. (My advisors David Buchholz and Heidi Schellman.)
