Chicago Botanic Gardens

White-winged Crossbill

Kim and I visited the Chicago Botanic Gardens Friday between dropping a friend off at the airport and attending "For A Limited Time Only", an exhibition at the Art Center in Highland Park featuring our good friend Jess White, an artist from St. Louis. While most of the outdoor plants are still in hibernation, the tropical and sub-tropical greenhouses were full of colorful life. The orchids were especially brilliant on an overcast March day. Outside, we were also surprised to find a White-winged Crossbill (a life bird for both Kim and I) in a group of spruce trees near the native plant gardens.

Lovely photos! But where's the White-winged Crossbill? I skunked out seeing them this season, even though they were apparently everywhere. Good on ya for getting one!

Amy,

Thanks for the nice comments. I only managed to get one photo of the WWC (a female) before she left, and it was a poor one. I just posted it with the other photos now.

Best regards,

Derek
