Northern Shrike at FNAL

I got out for a little birding at Fermilab on my lunch break today and saw a Northern Shrike, my first at the lab. This had been a nemesis bird for me as I went out time after time in search of one that Fermilab physicist and bird expert Peter Kasper saw regularly last year. The one I saw today was perched on the top of a low shrub just inside the main ring moat on the south-east side of the ring (red dot on map).

I was able to view it for several minutes from the ring road before it darted down into the snow behind the shrub and out of sight. I would have posted a picture of it, but of course I left my camera in the office. For more bird sightings at Fermilab, check out Peter Kasper's extensive database here.

Observed species:

Common Merganser
Common Goldeneye
Mallard
Canada Goose
Red-tailed Hawk
Northern Shrike
Great Blue Heron
