Kim and I are collaborating on an art piece for the Unpacked/Offset solo exhibition by Gabriel Bizen Akagawa from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Unpacked/Offset will be on display at the NIU Art Museum from March 25 - May 10 and is part of the Crate Space series by the same artist.
Today we visited the Pleasant Street Studio in DeKalb to meet Gabe and pick out our crate. Our original proposal involved planting an entire crate with native prairie plants to represent the fragmented state of native prairie in nothern Illinois, which we would then transplant to our farm as part of our prairie restoration project, or with permission outside the NIU Art Museum. When we saw the crate pictured above, Gabe mentioned splitting the crate, half being prairie and the other half a bench so visitors can interact with the piece. We thought it was a great idea, and decided on this crate (#5) for our piece.
Crate dimensions are:
(L x W x H) = 116.5" x 22.5" x 24"
